Book I: Twilight’s Shadow
Danaan 3291 – Deoch 13
By Danaan 3291 over a century had passed since the
end of the Shadows War. Even though Chadul’s minions
had been defeated by the discovery of the element light
Chadul himself
still fought on. It was said that the real power behind the
Loures throne still remained firmly in the hands of Chadul,
more specifically his Sgrios/Dubhaim allies and the remnants
of the Anaman Pact.
While the rest of Temuair lingered on in the Dark Ages,
attempting to rebuild, in the city of Rucesion a baby boy
was born under the most peculiar of circumstances. It was
said the day the boy was born a fiery comet was seen streaking
across Temuair from Mileth, to Loures, and finally over Rucesion.
No one knew who the father was. Julia Ramanayan
Caesar had discovered her pregnancy after returning from
a pilgrimage
to Loures. While she remembered nothing, any chances of recovering
her memory died with her – as she died in childbirth.
As per the dying Julia’s request the boy was given
the name of Dorch along with the family name Ramanayan and
the lineage name of Caesar.
Young Dorch was raised under the care of his uncle Flavius
Ramanayan Caesar, a prominent Rucesion businessman who owned
a small fleet of fishing ships. However, due to the negative
connotation of the name Dorch the boy quickly adopted the
name Gnaeus, although by that time he was usually just referred
to as Ramanayan.
By an early age young Ramanayan had learned to read and
write and was always eager to expand his knowledge. When
the Luathas shrine was restored in Rucesion he began studying
theology and history there. One day in Deoch 6 Ramanayan,
while studying in the Luathas shrine, was overcome by a powerful
seizure and collapsed at the base of the statue of Luathas.
Ramanayan remembered nothing when he recovered several
hours later but was almost certain something had happened
to him
while he was out. However the news of young Ramanayan’s
collapse was quickly overshadowed when word arrived the next
day that High Councilor Cyril of Loures had been assassinated.
And so the deochs passed by as Ramanayan grew older
and Temuair continued to change. The “mutants” known
as aislings had been growing steadily in numbers since Danaan
had sacrificed herself. At the age of fifteen in Deoch 13
Ramanayan was preparing to make a long journey with his Uncle’s
fishing fleet to the rich unspoiled waters near Tagor. Before
leaving Ramanayan planned to make an offering at the Luathas
temple and seek guidance for his journey. Just like seven
deochs before Ramanayan again found himself collapsed at
the feet of the Luathas statue. When he awoke he did not
find himself on the temple floor, as he expected he would,
but in the bed of what appeared to be an inn.
